Wartime Mantras

Here is something I've noticed: whenever war proliferates, so too does the phrase "women and children." Recited like a mantra and repeated across headlines, this phrase evokes an image of weakness, vulnerability, and helplessness. But let's be reminded: women are the backbone of society -- the vessels and sustainers of life -- and children are our future. Even in a state of vulnerability, women and children exhibit resilience, ingenuity, and strength beyond comprehension.

As our hearts grieve with the Ukrainian people, I encourage you to reflect on the following — and use this in your tween/teen classes!

  • What mantras/recited phrases do you notice in the coverage of war, current events, etc.?

  • In times of war, how do mantras build narratives? (for better or worse!)

  • Play with changing the phrase "women and children." Notice how that shifts your perspective, ie. What if you subbed in rebuilders and survivors? or simply, civilians?

  • Make it actionable: What mantras -- intentional or discursive -- do you routinely repeat to describe yourself, your world, your experiences? How can you shift them to be more accurate, purposeful, hopeful?

Thank you for going there.
